Pharmacotherapeutic Group:

Antiglaucoma agent.

Therapeutic Indication:

Pilocarpine: Treatment of chronic simple glaucoma, chronic angle-closure glaucoma, acute angle-closure glaucoma, pre- and postoperative management of intraocular tension, treatment of mydriasis.

Dosage and Administration:

Initial: 1 or 2 drops, 3 to 4 times daily. Individuals with heavily pigmented irides may require higher strengths.

Side Effects:

Transient stinging and burning, tearing, ciliary spasm, conjunctival vascular congestion, temporal, peri- or supra-orbital headache, superficial keratitis-induced myopia, blurred vision, poor dark adaptation, reduced visual acuity in poor illumination in older individuals and in individuals with lens opacity.
